St. George Ribbon is a social event dedicated to the celebration of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War; it is conducted in Russia since 2005. In 2008 the event acquired international character and is conducted more than in 30 countries. The ribbon is the expression of respect for veterans, a tribute to the memory of soldiers fallen on the battlefield, gratitude to people who have given everything for the front, to all those thanks to whom the victory was gained in 1945.
The ribbon distributed within the framework of the event is the replica of the traditional bicolor of the St. George Ribbon, but, as opposed to the original, it is not an award or heraldic symbol. Under the terms of the event the ribbons are distributed free of charge. In such a case, their use is not allowed by any parties or movements for political purposes.
Historical St. George Ribbon is a two-color ribbon, part of the Russian Order of St. George, Cross of St. George and St. George medal. With minor alterations the ribbon was included into the Soviet award system under the name of Guards Ribbon as special distinction. In the USSR the Guards Ribbon was used to adorn the Order of Glory and medal For the Victory over Germany. Besides, the image of the Guards Ribbon was placed on the Guards military units and ships banners. Black and orange colors of the ribbon mean «smoke and fire» and are a sign of individual heroism of a soldier on the battlefield.
